Construction vehicles make the road to campus a slalom run. The enormous crane sitting on what used to be an athletic field reaches into the low-hanging clouds like Jack’s beanstalk. After yesterday’s thunderstorms, the heatwave has broken.

Too many people I thought were on “our side” are crowing that Texas got what it voted for. I don’t think they would like it if anyone outside the country said the same thing about our vote for president. But I also don’t think they would see the connection. Or learn the lesson.

Which makes me wonder if the new alliances we are breaking into are not on party lines, or even factional lines, but into those with empathy and those without. Even just on Threads the people who are saying ‘I told you so’ to grieving Texans are being called ‘Blue MAGA,’ which means ‘MAGA’ is becoming a term that signals mean-spiritedness, selfishness, and triumphalism. Communal life as blood sport.

This is not about “both sides.” This is about calling out people who seem to have become the thing they claim to most despise.

I have to be careful, though. I was looking forward to the FAFO stage. For other people.
