You have a story, perhaps a memory.
You may have been prompted by an object—something you found when you were cleaning out a closet—
or an object helps you discover it.
Or the memory has been lurking there for a long time,
waiting.
However you got the story, you want to write it.
But you don’t know if you can.
Or should.
These are the stories that this course is designed for—the lost stories, the ones you might only have suspected, that are hidden in plain sight. They can be told and they want to be told.
This course respects both story and storyteller. It draws on intuition and makes use of well-established storytelling structures.
From Idea to Written is a twelve-week, guided self-study that will bring your story to life.
Participants will receive 12 ordered assignments to complete, the last of which will be to write the story from beginning to end at whatever length is appropriate. (Participants who find themselves writing a book will have the option to renew.) There will be a private Facebook group where you can ask questions and five bi-weekly coaching calls on Zoom.
Note: this course is not for those who have a completed manuscript that they want to publish. I believe that the decision to publish or not and in what form comes at the end—or toward the end anyway. The story itself will inform the shape it will take in the world. That decision is a part of this course.
More things you will learn (that aren’t usually a part of ‘how-to’ classes):
- what IS a story?
- why should a story be told?
- how to be specific — and why
- is your story worth telling? (spoiler alert: of course it is but you will learn why

Still have questions? I’m happy to talk by email or phone.

Leo Tolstoy said, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Something similar could be said for challenging stories, stories of trauma, loss, or secrets. The Vietnam War is one of those stories, or rather an endless multiplicity of such stories. The Vietnam War created a particular kind of multi-faceted trauma for those whose lives were shaped by it.
Long Time Passing is a flexible program tailored for people in the Vietnam War generation. It encompasses From Idea To Written, with special attention to shared language and memory and to the needs of those who bear that trauma still.
